Peru, IN — The Indiana Department of Education released statewide scores for the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination assessment, known as IREAD. While the statewide average increased approximately 5%, Peru Schools 3rd graders increased by 6.6%. This brings the school’s pass rate to an impressive 90.7%.

Clint Mathews, the building principal said, “This is not just a number—it’s a reflection of the dedication, collaboration, and hard work of every individual across our elementary schools who has contributed to our students' reading education. While the gains are reflected in our third-grade scores, we know this success is the result of the strong foundation laid by our Elmwood teachers, along with the tireless support of our reading specialists, instructional aides, interventionists, and every staff member who has worked to instill a love of reading into our students and help support their literacy development.” He added, “This achievement is a testament to what PCS can accomplish when we work together with a shared vision for student success.”

Peru’s district, under the leadership of superintendent Trent McCormick is starting to see positive change this year. A new lunch program, upgraded technology infrastructure, and a strategic curriculum plan across the district are just some of the improvements currently underway. This is McCormick’s second year at Peru Community Schools.
